Infrared Illuminator
All starlight telescopes need some light to magnify. This means that if you're in complete darkness, you won't be able to see. Therefore, we have a built-in infrared illuminator (IRI) on all oscilloscopes. Basically, what IRI does is emit a beam of infrared light that is barely visible to the naked eye but that your NVD can see. This allows you to use your oscilloscope even in complete darkness. IRI works like a flashlight, the distance you can see is limited. We do use the most powerful eye protection illuminators on the market. This allows our IRI to extend up to 100 yards. However, due to the short distances, the IRI may only cover 40-60% of the viewable area.

How far can you see?
There are many different variables that affect how far you can see with night vision devices. First, what do you want to see? Are you looking for another boat on the water, or a rabbit in the woods? The larger the object, the easier it is to see. Also, do you want to see the details (which we call the recognition range) or just to see if there is something? Maybe you only see movement, but you can't be 100% sure who it is or what it is. This is called the "detection range". The second variable is lighting conditions. The more ambient light you have (starlight, moonlight, and infrared light), the farther and farther you can see, the better. On nights where the moon and stars are out, you can always see farther if it's cloudy and overcast. We usually say you can tell the difference between a male and a female or a dog and a deer at about 75 to 100 yards. However, if you look in the open field, with a month and a half outside, you can see a barn or house 500 yards away.
